Strongsville-Now.com Site Tour
I prepared this web page for anyone interested in learning more about
my skills.
Below you'll find brief overviews of how the scripting at Strongsville-now.com
works. This should give you insights into the possible solutions I can
provide you should you ever need web development work.
Events Tool
The events tool is a way to allow site visitors to submit local events
to the website. I'm a huge believer in 'distributive content creation'.
The scripting has several conveniences and safety checks to allow for
easy administration from my end.
The event entry form can be found here.
When a visitor submits an event, the event information is stored in the
database. An administration alert is then e-mailed to me. The e-mail contains
all the pertinent information about the event. If I wish to approve the
event listing for display on the web site, I simple log into the secure
site administration area and approve the event. Upon approval, an e-mail
notice is sent back to the event submitter as a courtesy.
Nice features with the event tool include the date functions. There's
a javascript pop-up calendar to ensure easy and accurate date entry. The
event tool also allows for showing events across multiple days and there's
even an auto-expire feature to ensure that old events are not listed on
the site.
Pet Page Images One Tools
This is an image upload and manipulation
tool. This is the most complex tool on Strongsville-Now.com In one
easy step, an image is uploaded to the server, a database entry is created,
the image is processed and an administration e-mail message is sent.
In a nutshell, a visitor can upload an extremely large jpeg image. The
script will then reprocess the image to create new images at the appropriate
size and compression rate. What this means is that the visitor need not
resize the image before uploading. It's a convenience for the visitor
and a convenience for the site administrator. Go ahead - upload a 1.2
MB image at 1200 dpi!
In this example, thumbnails and larger blow up images are created from
the original source. Once again, when a visitor upload an image, an administration
message is e-mailed to me. I can then view the image in the secure online
area. After reviewing the image I can then approve the image for display
on the site.
There are countless applications of this technology which include managing
online product catalogs, web content management systems, photo galleries
and just about anything where you need images submitted to a web site.
Business Directory
This is just your typical database driven listing - nothing too special
here. All the information is stored in an online database. Through the
site secure administration area I can create new business categories and
sub categories, as well as add new business listings. Now look carefully
at the url - looks like a static web page and not a web page generated
by scripting. I wrote a small mod_rewrite script in the server's .htaccess
file to manipulate the web address. This allows for easy indexing by search
engine spiders like Google's google.bot. This is an example of some of
my Internet marketing and SEO optimization skills. I have invested an
enormous amount of time and energy towards the understanding of how to
market websites - I'm sure I could do the same for yours should your
site need Search Engine Optimization.
Smart Form Logic
Here's an example of drop down menus
which are populated by data stored in the online database. A nice added
touch is that there is a dependent feature where the content in the lower
field is repopulated based upon the visitor's selection in the upper field.
The form also has nice examples of valid data entry enforcement. Zip code
and phone fields will only accept numeric input of correct length and
formatting. The form validation goes a step forward over your typical
validation scripts. Normally, if you enter something wrong you get an
error on the next page and have to go back and redit your entry - frustrating!
This validation is done live as you type. Try entering an apha charater
into the zip code for example.
There's also duplicate info validation triggers. Before inserting the
record into the database scripting checks to ensure that no other business
listing is found with the identical phone number of business name.
